Position Title: Refugee Tutor
Program: Catholic Charities Refugee Youth Program
Responsibilities for Tutors:
· Visit refugee youth at home or public places like libraries, school media centers, cafeterias, or parks to conduct tutoring.
· Commit one hour per week to teach/tutor English skills (vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, reading comprehension, writing, conversational English). Tutoring could be either face-to-face or via an online platform, e.g., Zoom, Microsoft Team, or Google Classroom
· Commit to a 6-month or more volunteering period with one refugee youth.
· Assist youth with homework and/or school projects if needed.
· Assist youth with core subjects such as English, Math, Science and Social Studies
· Assist youth with preparation for state assessment test/SAT/ACT
· Assist youth with GED preparation if applicable.
· Assist youth in becoming technically savvy, i.e., familiar with smartphones and different Apps.
· Regularly communicate with the youth’s parents and case manager to update them on the progress and report if there are concerns or issues.
· Record volunteer hours in Get Connected (volunteer website) and send them to the case manager at the end of each month.
Qualifications:
· Refugee Youth Volunteers must be at least 18 years old. He/she must have
· High School Diploma, associate, or bachelor’s degree
· Bilingual (either Spanish or Haitian Creole) is beneficial but not necessary.
· Teaching experience or willingness to teach refugee youth English and (if necessary) other subjects.
· Desire to make a difference in the life of refugee youth in a positive way.
· Respect refugee families, their path, language, and culture, and maintain personal information to be kept confidential.
· Understanding and empathy of the struggle youth are experiencing.
· Patience when teaching youth with limited English proficiency.
· Background checked/fingerprinted for security clearance.
· Attended video training on safety via Catholic Charities Volunteer Training Link.
Training:
· Completes Safety Certification and Passes Fingerprinting/Background Check(s) with the Diocese of Orlando and the Department of Child and Families
· Participates in Training and Orientation. Receiving Guidelines on Mentoring Activities.
